Leicester put their recent woes behind them as they overcame West Ham despite making nine changes, and Brendan Rodgers was elated with the team’s display.
What did he say?
The former Celtic boss has found a winning formula with this Foxes’ side and the fact he won with so many changes indicates that his philosophy has been taken on board in the 11 months he’s been at the club.
That will delight him, as will the performances of those whose heads could have dropped due to a lack of game time, such as Demarai Gray and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Instead, that pair put in match-winning displays while youngster James Justin also stepped up to the plate, proving he may be able to cut it in the first-team on a regular basis.
As well as their strong technical showing, Rodgers was also happy due to another attribute on display – mentality.
Speaking to LCFC TV, he said:
“I said to the players beforehand that in this sport, football at the top level, you’ve got to be at your maximum. They showed that mentality.
“You’ve got to have that edge and I thought we had that today in terms of our energy and attitude in the game, considering so many of the players that we brought into the squad.
“Lots of those players have come in, showed a great mentality, they showed the honesty in the group, and they got the three points.”

Strength in depth
Of the players who came in for the match against the Hammers, only Ayoze Perez has been a regular starter this term, with Iheanacho having made the second-most starts with just three in the league all season.
That underlines the fact that Rodgers has consistently picked the same starting eleven whenever possible, and although that has brought good results, it does raise a little doubt about the strength in depth.
However, that question has now been put to rest somewhat, and the Foxes’ boss has proven his ability to get the best of his fringe players, even though their match sharpness must be at a level below their teammates.

Leceister stand in good stead because of that, and therefore they should be able to maintain their push for Champions League qualification, already occupying a strong position in the table.
The mentality and character of the squad will also be vital to that, as Rodgers alludes to. Rivals such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham have the ability to bounce back from poor results, but their current inconsistency leaves them with a lot of catching up to do.
If Rodgers can maintain happiness in the squad and bring in back-up players to play more, then his side will have a fantastic chance of finishing in the top four for just the second time in their history – and in their manager’s first full season in charge.
The Leicester squad is clearly in a good place but here are two things that must happen in the January transfer window.
